MCCABE & MRS MILLER / Time For Leaving CD / Magnetic Motorworks Records / 2010
I’ve never seen the ROBERT ALTMAN film that gives this duo its name, but I would venture to guess it’s an exploration of an unusual relationship taking place in an evocative time of American history. Kinda like what is offered by this CD, which dabbles in blues, ballads, country, rootsy rock, and barroom jazz. The vocals are at the forefront, recorded like they are from a bygone age as well. Did I mention that VICTOR KRUMMENACHER (of CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN and the MONKS OF DOOM) and ALLISON FAITH LEVY (of the SIPPY CUPS and the LOUD FAMILY) are the duo represented here? SF giants in full force, sounding deceptively sweet.
SOUNDS LIKE:
THE KNITTERS, GRAM PARSONS, LUCINDA WILLIAMS
SUGGESTED TRACKS:
2 “Come Back Home To Me†(why do I have visions of MARIA MULDAUR?)
3 “Fare Thee Well†(nice dual vocal rocker)
6 “Forgiveness†(slow and wistful)
